Creating
a conquering CV
Far too numerous people apply for job
positions with medium and inadequately written CVs, and yet wonder why they do not
get any call for interviews. There is a usual perception that the CV (likewise
called a Resume) just needs to show where you worked and what role you have
been doing. However, you may learn nowhere in your Dubai job hunt, If this
sounds like your CV! To succeed you have to keep in mind the following. Then,
you absolutely must do your practice and invest humorless time in prepping a
superb CV, if you are serious about your Dubai job quest.
Foremost and first, you must have to remember
that your CV is a marketing document; a flyer aimed to sell you and your skills
and expertise to employers, just like a product. Its contents, language,
punctuation, font, and indeed the quality of the document it is printed on (if you are
submitting it physically) each count and has an impact on your chances of
getting the position you are applying for.
Secondly, you must remember that HR
directors receive hundreds of CVs for each vacant position. They review them speedily,
occasionally spending very few seconds on each CV, and make prompt judgments
about whether to eliminate the applicant or take them to the next coming recruitment
level.
Even so, you absolutely must invest serious
time, thought, and sweating effort into grooming a professional and eye-catching CV, if you are serious about your Dubai job hunt.

of a CV

This is the most critical part of the CV and
what really limited job seekers manage to get right. A frequent mistake is to
list your responsibilities, generally copy-pasted straightaway from the job
description. But actually, employers are more interested in what you ‘achieved’
in the functional role, preferably quantified. See specimens below.

Customizing your CV for Dubai
In addition to comprehensive globally
recognized guidelines for building a strong and productive CV, there are some
regional ethics that you should follow when preparing a résumé for job
vacancies in Dubai. These may differ from what you are used to in your home
country, but they are expected in Dubai and you must follow them.
• Nationality:
Your passport nationality needs to be mentioned on your CV under your
individual details. However, in the case of dual nationals say both
nationalities.
• Photograph:
Most companies in Dubai prefer to see your photograph on your CV. For
multinationals and for other senior roles, this tends to be less common. Yet, for
any client-facing job, it is absolutely critical. Make sure you are prepared
and dressed professionally. Smile, and avoid selfies. Female candidates should
avoid excessively revealing or Instigative photographs.
•Work experience:
having
worked for a well-known and prestigious company in your home market may help
your outlook with employers in your home country. Still, unless that company
is well known in Dubai, you will find that your home experience may not open
numerous doors for you. To address this, it is worth adding a thumbnail
description of the company in your CV to spread its worth and significance, for
illustration “ABC Corporation – Largest consumer goods enterprise in the USA”.
• Education:
the
University you graduated from might be the most esteemed in your home country
but could still be unknown in Dubai. However, If your university is something you
are specifically proud of, you should add a description that conveys this, for
illustration “National University of Science and Technology’’ – No 1,
engineering university in Pakistan”.
• Certifications:
you
should emphasize in your CV any certifications you have earned, particularly
from multinational institutes as they are more likely to be honored in Dubai than
any domestic certification from your home country. However, these should surely
be mentioned, if you have earned Dubai government certificates or licenses, you
must mention them.
• Driving
license:
this can be significant for some sales job roles that
demand extensive travel within Dubai or to neighboring towns.
• Visa status:
if
you are already in Dubai when applying for any position, you should mention
your visa status — whether you are on a visit visa, work visa, or as a
dependent.
• Availability:
numerous employers firmly prefer applicants who are accessible immediately and
don’t have to serve a notice to their current employers and go through the
process of visa change promptly. However, if you are not working and available
to start immediately, must mention this.
• CV Length:
HR
professionals do not require reading a long CV to assess a seeker’s
qualifications. Even if you have been working for decades, be clear and brief,
and a one to two-page CV length is right enough for submission.
• Attachments:
Although
its frequent practice in some countries to contain numerous attachments with
the CV (e.g. passport copy, degree certification, testimonials, etc.), in
Dubai, this isn’t the standard and can indeed put employers off. Submit your CV
without attachments, only furnishing other documents on request.

Certifications and
Licenses
Certificates
Dubai
employers really love certificates! For most professions, having a
certification from an internationally recognized awarding body will
significantly add stars to your CV and boost your chances of securing a job.
Certifications from the United Kingdom and some US professional awarding bodies are considered the most highly valued in
Dubai – for example, CIPD or SHRM for human resources, CIMA or ACCA for Accounting, etc. You can see below a
complete list of the most recognized certifications in Dubai. Note that the
preferences may vary from employer to
employer.
Licenses
In certain professions, having a local Dubai license is a must-do.
For example, for Real Estate developers/ brokers it is important to have a
‘RERA license’ (issued by Real Estate Regulatory Agency). Doctors and nursing staff must obtain a ‘DHA
license’ (issued by Dubai Healthcare Authority) to work in Dubai.
Some licenses are much easier to obtain by taking a short course,
while others may take months of follow-up with government authorities. The harder
these licenses are to get, the fewer people have them and the more you stand
out in the job market if you have them. In some cases, the right certificate or
license may be all that the employer needs to see before hiring you!
In a few cases, licenses issued in other countries can be acceptable,
either directly as a recognized license (for example the UK-issued ARB license
for architects) or indirectly because it can help you secure the
corresponding Dubai license (e.g. for doctors).
